Montgomery, AL – Alabama’s justice system faces growing scrutiny over its reliance on fines and fees that disproportionately impact financially struggling individuals. From bail to parking tickets, court fees, and phone calls from prison, every aspect of the system involves monetary costs. These practices, originally intended as punishment and deterrence, are now drawing criticism from advocates who argue they perpetuate cycles of poverty.
In response, Alabama Values and The Beacon Center will host a virtual panel titled “Justice at a Cost: Rethinking Fines, Fees, and Justice in Alabama”, taking place on Monday, December 9th, at 6 p.m. cst, to address this critical issue. Moderated by Anneshia Hardy, Executive Director of Alabama Values, the discussion brings together influential voices from government, nonprofit, legal, and faith-based communities to explore solutions.
The panel features:
- Judge Tiffany McCord, District Judge, 15th Judicial Circuit
- Aylia McKee, Chief Public Defender, Montgomery County
- Pastor Richard Williams, Founder, The Beacon Center and Director, Next Steps Program
The Beacon Center, a hub for community services in West Montgomery, including job training, GED classes, mental health resources, and food programs, serves as a powerful backdrop for these discussions. Pastor Williams emphasizes the importance of multi-sector collaboration to address systemic inequities in the justice system. The briefing will also take a closer look at The Beacon Center’s program The Next Steps.
“The Next Steps Program matters because it transforms challenges into opportunities, empowering individuals to rebuild their lives with dignity. It bridges the gap between uncertainty and stability, offering resources and guidance tailored to each person’s journey. At its heart, this program is a testament to the power of hope, resilience, and community support.” Pastor Richard Williams explained.
“Fines and fees have become an invisible tax on Alabama’s most vulnerable communities, creating barriers to justice that perpetuate cycles of poverty,” said Anneshia Hardy, Executive Director of Alabama Values, “By bringing together diverse voices through the Justice in Focus series, we hope to spark conversations that not only expose these inequities but also pave the way for actionable solutions. Alabama deserves a justice system that works for everyone, not just those who can afford it.”
The event is the third installment of the Justice in Focus series, which has previously tackled Alabama’s parole system and strategies to reduce gun violence. The series aims to spark meaningful dialogue and drive systemic change, culminating this year with a call to reimagine the state’s approach to justice.
